Default Looking at a new Project, Need help and input

So I am finishing up a project muscle car, and am starting to look into my next project. I am heavily considering a highly modified 80's Audi coupe. I have always been in love with the Audi's raced in Group B (eg A1,A2,S1). I know the amount of work needed to replicate the S1 in terms of the body, so I would like to focus on the Drive line for now.
I would like to get an 80's Audi Coupe WITH Quattro and a 5-speed. Then boost the engine like the old Group B racers (450+ AWHP), and track/street it for a while. Then, down the road, tear into the body and make a SPQ or S1 replica.

So here are my questions:

What would be a good car to start with? (I am in America)
-4000q?
What engine should I be looking for in these cars, and what power can it handle?
What modifications would be needed to the chassis and the suspension/drive line to accommodate this power?

Thank you so much for any help!

Hey its cool you thinking of joining the Audi family. My suggestion is that you find a Quattro with a Torsen center diff (true all wheel drive) some have rear Torsen diff as well but it can be swapped in.Not sure if the 4000q has it but the Ur-Quattro and the 90-91 coupe quattro have them. Most projects are using the inline 5 cylinder 20 valve turbo (factory or aftermarket) because they are considered bulle tpoof. There are several different versions of this same engine. AAN is the most sought after and supply is low. Wiring can be a pain when transplanting these. Another option is to get a 7a 5 cylinder non turbo (stock in the 90 coupe quattro) then put in the 034 motorsport turbo kit. The 7a engines are more common and have an easier life. Their weak point is the internals (pistons, rods, etc) but once those are replaced they are basically the same engine. There are plenty of these 5 cylinders turbos with 400,500,600, even 700 horse power...http://www.034motorsport.com/javad-8...a-38.html...as far as the the drive line and suspension you will need to replace all the bushings and mounts with stiffer aftermarket stuff. The suspension needs stiffening with springs or coilovers. also beefed up sway and strur bars. The driveline itself is almost bulletproof and can pretty much handle whatever you throw at it. Best thing you can do to start is join some forums such as http://www.motorgeek.com/ and http://www.s2forum.com/ (im on both with the same screen name so find me on them). There are a ton of cool helpful people and and many projects posted up (5,6, and 8 cylinder). These forums are more focused on the "classic audis" and are chalk full of info. Also check out http://www.034motorsport.com/ and http://2bennett.com/ for an idea of what products are out there. Hope this helps! - Justin

Thanks for the reply! I am doing a TON of research on weather or not ths project is do-able or not.

So far, I think I will try to get a UR Quattro. Then do everything you said to the driveline (bushings and mounts), and boosting the engine to the extremes. But here is my problem: I want to eventually make it into an S1 replica, and was trying to figure out if I can basically just cut off the front end of the car and put the new front end on it and shorten the rear end.

If this will work, It seems like a do-able task, besides getting a hold of the S1 body kit or dimensions.

okay so I think you mean the sport quattro aka "shorty" to make an exact replica is possible but a lot lot lot of work. Shortening the wheel base is a lot of work but doable. You will need a lot of time(and $$$). You basically have to chop the center section of the cat out and reweld it back together. check out this one http://www.motorgeek.com/viewtopic.p...5342&start=175 ....also here is a kit I believe you may be interested in .... http://cgi.ebay.de/Audi-Quattro-Urqu...item4aa171ad15 ....also you might as well learn German because you will be going over seas for majority of parts

After thinking about it a lot, and being distracted for the last few months, I think i want to get a URQuattro, and then get an 034 motorsports turbo kit and boost the motor as high as I can for street use. They said a loose estimate was $14k - $20k for the engine to be done right to the limits. ANy inout or ideas on this plan?
