Default What is this noise.....U-joint maybe??

I have a 1990 Audi 90 Quattro 20 valve that runs fantastic! Only thing I have noticed and its been this way since I've owned her (about 8 months) is that when i'm upshifting on acceleration I hear a "clunk" noise when I let out the clutch. It sounds like it's coming more near the rear. I do notice that if I gently let out the clutch and shift gently through the gears it's not as bad. I have zero vibration in the driveshaft even at over 80 mph. It's more annoying than anything. I was thinking maybe it was the u-joint or carrier bearing?? I did read in my Bentley that the u-joint can be lubricated. I ALSO read that these stupid drivelines CANNOT be repaired!! WTF!!!!! Also,..is it really necessary to have a special alignment tool when re-installing?? Thanks Mike

Default It's probably a transmission mount.

My 87 5000S/Q was doing the same thing. The rubber center in one of the transmission mounts was totally coming apart. It won't fall out because the bolt goes all the way through it but it will allow the mounting bracket and the subframe bump into each other. Especially when shifting because the trans wants to move up and down. If the mount is busted, it'll let the mounting bracket bang into each other. They shouldn't be difficult to replace as all of the bolts come out the bottom.

Hope this helps,

Dave

Hey Dave thanks for the suggestion! Your the second person that has given that as a possibility. I did get under the car and looked at the differential mounts. I was able to push up on them and it moved.
