Hello fellow Audi enthusiasts,

This might be the dumbest question ever, but please don't treat it as such.

I am a new Audi A4 owner, a gorgeous pearl blue, 2005.5 2.0L TURBO w/ Sport package. I've had it for 2 months now and I LOVE IT.

I have only one question... It takes 30 minute to fill the gas tank. Every time, the pump handle's auto-shut off activates every 5 seconds. It makes filling up a complete hassle.

Am I missing something here. I consider myself a fairly educated man. I hold college degrees from a couple different higher learning establishments , but I can't fill my gas tank efficiently. What gives?

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can remedy this? Am I doing something wrong, or is it just how this works?

 

Have you tried going "part throttle" on the pump handle? A lot of cars (not just Audi's) can't take more than that, depending on the pump. Otherwise, there could be a problem with the On-Board Fuel Vapor Recovery. If it's malfunctioning, fuel is going in but there's no place for the displaced air to go except back up the filler tube and "click". Think sink drain without a vent stack. Any number of things could be at fault BUT, first thing I'd check is the filter on the vapor recovery system. It's next to the Leak Detection Pump. Can't recall off hand exactly where it is on your car, thinking it's in the right rear wheel well, behind the fender liner. Hope this helps some.

 

Oops, my bad. The canister and LDP, filter, etc is under the car, up inside the spare tire well. There's a round plastic cover held in with 3 screws and everythings above it.

 

I've had a similar issue with my b5, but I usually just have to pull the nozzle out another inch or so, and then it's fine. For some reason having the nozzle all in doesn't really work. Give this a shot too. Enjoy the new car!
