HELP!!! whats SAFE MODE??
I dont know what happened to my 99 a4 1.8!! i disconnected my battery for about HAlf an hour and reconnected them back onto the battery and now my car is acting weird. I turn my car on put it wants to turn off the rpm hand is not steady and i also tried driving it and it cant go over 20 mph when half hour before i was driving just fine. I asked a friend who also owns an audi and told me the car can be on SAFE MODE. What is that?? if anybody knows how to restart my car please reply. I aslo do not own the owners manual so i dont have the code. what do i do???
Why did you disconnect your battery in the first place??... if there was something the computer found wrong it will put it in "limp home" mode on purpose... at least thats what my moms saab did on me once.. but its so you dont wreck your car even more. if its something mechanical then its compeletly different than "safe mode" but thats what it sounds like to me. try pulling an ecu fuse or whatever it has related to computer then turn the key over like starting then put fuse back in and see what happens after that.
your car thinks someone was trying to steal it by disabling the power supply for the alarm ...... got your owners manual ? there is an unlock code for the security system that you input via the radio..... gonna need that or the VIN and the dealer can get it for ya ....
safe mode = limp home - this post just might help anyone who goes through what I've just been through. Audi A6 1997 2.6. V6 Avant. The first case of limp home - lights on PRND lit up, stuck in 2nd gear and with the gear change causing a jolt, etc. I was driving the family on holiday when all of a sudden the radio went off and the brake light warning appeared. I could have lived with that but clearly couldn't go through an entire holiday in second gear. I had to get a tow home and then rent a car for the holiday (later I claimed it back on the holiday insurance so was not problem). I had it take to an Audi dealer as I felt certain the gear box had gone. They charged me so much money for "tracing the fault to ECM" and "rehousing switch gear". Second time (just this week) the brake light bulb went and also the radio failed and the car went into limp home mode. After reading various forums on the web, I decided to just try all the tricks to see if I could save some dealer cash (nearly £200UK). I simply checked all the fuses (replaced two) replaced brake light bulbs (which cleared the warning lights, but not the limp home mode) and then disconnected and reconnected the battery which cleared the limp home mode. Now all OK and my wonderful old family bus is back in full order. I truly hope someone with the same issue finds this and it they get the same fix without paying the dealers. Quite why the VAG engineers thought that is better to be towed home than be without a radio or a brake light for a while is quite beyond me. Shame such a well engineered car is blighted by some over zealous health and safety nut programming the engine management system.
