Could use some help with this one please!

My A3 will crank as if it is going to start, engine will turn over and shut right down. If I give it gas when starting, engine revs but shuts right down. Usually right after, the instrument cluster will flash almost every light and for a while and then I see nothing light up on the dash. Speedo and RPMs do not function either.

Took it to a mechanic and he told me I needed to replace this part number (8P0 953 549 F) but that's the steering control module (like here 8P0953549F - Steering Control Module - ES#458655).

Can anyone confirm that or has anyone had or seen similar issues?
