Default 93 quattro. headunit issues

i just bought my first audi on monday, 1993 90. the kid i bought its from said the radio had stopped working. i thought nothing of it becuase i had another headunit that i planned on putting in anyway. the unit that came with the car was a sony and it didnt work, i could put a cd in and it would spit it out. it would not turn on or anythi ng more then that. the unit i planned on putting in was also a sony so i didnt bother rewiring the harness becuase the plug fit both units. and the same thing happened with my headunit, i could put a cd in and it would spit it out when i pushed the eject button. but yet agian nothing more happened.i then took the wiring harness out and undid all the crimps that connected the plug from the back of the radio to the car wire harness and re-crimped them all again. and the same thing happened, could put a cd in and take it out but nothing more. the unit is getting power if it takes the cd and ejects it. im dumbfounded

any body have any ideas on what the issue could be?

Make sure power antenna is not messing you up by hooking it to the amp signal output. The rear speakers will not work if the antenna is not extended. Learned that the hard way with my '95 90. Try fader and balance and make sure everything works, does the radio work?
