Winter Wheel/Tire Recommendations

Winter Wheel/Tire Recommendations
I know it is August and hot as h#ll in most of the country (my apologies for any and all Southern Hemisphere members), but it is now time to get ready for winter.
I am looking for suggestion and recommendations for winter/snow wheel and tire recommendations. This will be my first winter with quattro!
My first thought was to use my existing avus 18x8 and put snow tires on. But I am wondering if I should change wheels too...are the 18x8s too wide, should I go to something narrower.
And what tires are people using....I live in the north east and do allot of driving....from NY to Vt just about every weekend.

RE: Winter Wheel/Tire Recommendations
I used to put snow tires on my Mustang every winter. If you can stand the look of black steel rims, they are the cheapest. But any type fo rim will work, but normally the thinner and smaller the better. I also used the Bridgestone Blizzak WS50 tires. They were freakin awesome. They made my Mustang handle so much better than having just all-season tires on it.
