I found a 2004 S4 6-speed with 153k for $9000. Should I be afraid of the high mileage or do these cars go for a long time?

It's honestly going to come down to maintenance history. At that mileage you should be prepared for wear and tear on components and you will be replacing things, but make sure (with documentation) that things like timing service, fluid flushes, etc have been done properly or you could be in for trouble.
