Default 1st and 2nd gear issue

Hey there, new to the forums, so first and foremost, hi all!!

Second, I hope I am in the right area.

Third, the meat a potatoes.

I recently purchased a 2002 Audi A4 Quattro 3.0, V6, 6-speed manual, with 120k on it, a beautiful little vehicle, but I am also a little worried.

First and second gear are both a little difficult to get into, gotta push on them a little bit, and if I rev to hard and try to slam it into 2nd there is definite grinding. I noticed one other thing, lemme see if I can draw a crude diagram.

Okay, in this little figure above, I also notice, when in neutral, a little resistance where the broken "\" is. As if just getting over to the first-second shifting area is troublesome (although this resistance is much less). And it seems like every once and while the whole shifting system gets . . . sticky?
As if some times after getting out of 1st or 2nd and the resistance carries over to the other gears, and they are a little hard to get into for a bit. Though, on the whole, all other gears work great.

I got the car for a very good price, so even if I have to pay for transmission troubles, I can still come out okay. I am just curious what you experts think. Shift collar? Synchros? Gearbox? I also read some people noticed a bit of difference switching to Red Line manual transmission fluid.

Any help is greatly appreciated, Thank you all!
