2.8 Timing belt life..?
I received no history on my A6 when I bought it last week,I just mailed a letter to the previous owner to ask if he changed the timing belt, car has 93k.
My question is.....if the timing belt let's go while engine is running, will the 2.8 engine experience majormalfunction catastrophically....meaning collision of valves and pistons....???
I have to drive this car daily and while I do not know if the timing belt has been changed, I realize I may be driving a time bomb, and is reason for my question.............[:@]

Yeah you will have major head damage if the belt breaks, what you need to do is take off one of the timing belt covers and check to see if the belt looks new. What i mean is you can still see the lettering of the manufacture on the outer part of the belt and there aren't any white lines on the outside of the belt.
The dealer says 105k but that has been changed to 80k because of the high number of timing belt failures.
Get it checked ASAP.

Thank you for the heads-up..........I am a small diesel mechanic and should be able to detect belt age.........I needed only to get my question answered about where these engine live in the time-line of life.........thank you for your professional advise......Steve
You can get the timing belt/rollers, tensioner, and water pump for about $280 at www.ecstuning.com and the labor would be around 8 hours at whatever rate the shop is charging.
Since the belts are rated at 100k i would expect the previous owner did not do the service. I went 130 on mine with no prob, lucky though. Don't over lookputtingyour cars nose into serviceposition or you will have one hell of a time getting the job done.

I recieved aresponse from the previous owner (he bought the car new, I am the second owner) he reported to methat he had a new waterpump and timing belt replaced at 75K, also that he performed oil changes every 3k miles. I was very happy to hear that, so I guess I'm good for another 82K
