Hi i finally got my 2001 1.6 a3 yesterday, the fuel gauge is faulty and is very tempremental.

I have taken the fuel sender out and cleaned it but still does not work, if i disconnect the connector on top on the pump and reconnect the fuel gauge works ?

i am thinking about replacing the sender ?

 

Try using electrical contact cleaner on the connector pins and sanding them until they shine. Reclean the resistive element on the sender the same way (gently). See what happens - if that's not a fix it may well need replacement.
