Ive recently bought a 2001 B6 A4 1.8 TQ and have noticed some knocking when accelerating in first and second gear. Its intermittent and is more promanent with more people in the car. I can be anywhere from 1 knock up to 4 knocks in first and second. It never happens in any other gear and sometimes doesnt happen at all. The knocks seem to speed up as the gear accelerates.

You cant realy hear it but you can feel it slightly through the car, Ive heald the gearstick when its happened and it doesnt seem to be directed from there.

Ive had a look underneath and there is a little bit rotational play in the propshaft, is this normal?

I would initialy think it was propshaft or CV related but can only feel it in the 2 gears. I can put quite a bit of torque on it in 3rd and it still wont do it.

Anyone got any ideas?

Play in the propshaft if normal. What kind of tranmission? Im assuming manual considering the gearstick but not really sure. Are you sure its coming from the trans and not the engine or rearend? Being intermitant its kinda hard to say what it could be. Does it seem to do it more when its cold then when the car is warmed up.

 

Hi there, its manual transmission. Im not 100% sure where its coming from but Id say beneath/behind me, and if anything it seems to do it more when its warmed up. Id say the temp of the car didnt have anthing to do with it.

The trans is located almost entirely in front of the driver. Since its coming from beneeth/behind you make sure the propshaft isnt hitting any of the heat sheilds or the exhaust.

 

Ill check that out cheers. If it was the propshaft hitting something would it the noise not be present in every gear though? just this is only happenig in first and second gear.

Any ideas where the limited slip diff is on this car?

There is no limited slip diff. There is a torsen diff at the rear of the transmission and an open diff at the front. There is also and open diff in the rearend. Considering its only in first or second i would suspect something inside the trans.
