Unhappy A4 makes big clonk when breaking

I just bought a 96 A4, B6 model. When I am breaking, just before I come to a stop the car makes a big clonk coming from the front end. Any idea what could cause that? Help please!

Your car needs one or more control arms replaced - take that to the bank. Either the ball joints or the bushings are worn. This is a known issue and you have to replace the arm, not the joint or bushing. Best move is to replace everything up front. Did mine a couple weeks ago. The kit from FCP Groton cost me $242 including shipping. It has all 8 front arms, the outer torrid ends, and new swaybar endlinks. It'll take several hours and can give you some fits but it's worth doing it and doing it yourself (the labor would be a LOT). The car will drive like new when you're done though.

Yes, you are right. I went to a repair facility and they told me the same thing, it needs the entire front end replaced. They were quoting me $1,600, guess I will be getting the parts online and doing it myself. Thanks for your help.

Go on eBay and look for seller FCPOnline (or something similar). That's FCP Groton. Get the auction number and price, and then call them (phone number is on the auction page). You can order direct and get the auction price that way. For me it was $242.10 with free shipping.
