The5 speed transmission on my 1998 A4 2.8Q is noisy when taking off in first gear. It growls..only in first. My mechanic is pretty sure that first gear is going south. He told me to wait it out and replace it with a used unit. The cost of taking apart the tranny and replacing parts is more expensive that a used unit. The car has only 110K!

Has anyone had a similar experience? Thanks

 

Sounds like he is right. I have not had any issues but it sounds like a manual tranny problem.
