Default TRANSMISSION NOISE

Hi people!
New to the forum, but would like some advice on recent noise from transmission on my A6 avant Quattro. This is the 2.5 Diesel 2002 vintage with 95000 on the clock. I am about to get a new set of tyres as the are nearly on the wear bars, and the problem could stem from them, but there is a lot of road noise when I get to 30mph +. It is not gearbox, and I have jacked up the whells and cannot feel any play that might indicate wheel bearing problems ( or is this too basic?). Will see what happens when the new tyres are on, but has anybody got any ideas what the problem might be if there is no improvement?
Cheers
Fozzie
