Default a6 2.8 no start

Hi Guys,
Your help would be greatly appreciated.
I have just purchased an audi a6 2.8 1997 a month ago and was running ok.
The car wont start.
Turn the key all dash lights are ok.
No starter engage cant even hear a solenoid click.
The brake light indicator next to to park selection is working.
I have checked the fuses.
The key wont release from the ignition.
I have disconnected the battery to try and reset all to no avail.
I have used a booster battery and still no luck.
I suspect either park selector switch if it has one or ignition key receptacle.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as any sought of competant techs are very rare in the land of sand
Cheers in anticipation

Hi Guys,
The saga contiues.
Car been with Audi Dubai 3 days now and they have come up with the following possibility
The ignition key receptacle and starter motor has failed.
I am no rocket scientist but to have both items fail at once leads me to ponder.
Audi stated the starter solenoid is a combined unit and not replaceable as a single unit. So i will have to buy a starter complete.
Any comments would be greatly appreciated.
Best regards to all

is it an automatic then look to the starter inhibitor, the starter motor is a single unit but can easily be tested by putting power to it to make it crank and the ignition doesnt even need to be on for that test, ignition is a different thing but also easily tested by removing the ignition module ( black box ) and shorting the wires there, they are taking the P and trying to get a large bill rather than do it the easy and correct way

If the key wont come out with the selector in the park position i would suspect the ignition cylinder. Could also be a p/n switch. Try starting the car in neutral or be careful here, in gear. You are correct in assuming that its unlikly both failed at the same time. Its not impossible thou. Ive had a car with a faulty ignition switch leave the starter engaged after the car was started. That also burned up the starter.

Hi guys,
Thank you for your replies.
I have asked about the P/N switch and Audi's reply was because the gear lever can be moved this cant be the problem.
The ignition switch has now been replaced and still no start but this time we have a solenoid cick (so they say as i cant get near the car)
They cannot source a starter locally and will have to get one in germany 400usd plus fitting labor and 20 days wait??????????????
The saga continues
Will provide progress reorts if any??
Cheers

Hi Guys the saga goes on.
After much searching for a starter(20 day wait from the dubai dealer not an option) i have located one from an audi dealer in the UK and should arrive this weekend (5days) and only 250usd. i will let u know if the starter fixes the fault.
I am sure i will be very red faced if it does.
Cheers to all.
Scott
