Default a6 alternator

hey guys/gals, i have a 1999 audi a6 quattro and recently i was driving and the gear selection screen on the instrument panel lit up and all of the gears (d, r, n, p, 2, 3, 4) were selected and then my car died and i jump started my car and took the right cable to the battery off and the car died which im sure means the alternator is bad.......so my question to you all is if this has happened to anypone and is it the alternator??? and if it is can anyone reccomend a good place to shop for a reliable alternator because i have an audio system and im a 17 yr old kid making 100 bucks a week. Thx a bunch to all of you...

Default RE: a6 alternator

Welcome to the forums, this applies to all your posts so far (the one about the windows and this one) if you search you will find all the answers you need. You need a vag-com for the window mod, and your dash lighting up drnp234 means your transmission went into limp mode. Maybe it's called safe mode. You should never disconnect your battery cable while the car is running...EVER, it destabilized the charging system and can damage the alternator. It also doesn't necessarily mean your alternator is bad because the car died. What does the volt meter on the dash say when the car is running? I don't know how many miles are on your car but check into if the timing belt has been changed.
