Default A6 misfire/shaking ECM light on

Hi all,

Yesterday my 2004 6 suddenly began sputtering, the ECM light went on, and the rpms were going up and down automatically. The car could barely be driven.

I did some research last night and learned that Audi remedied this issue via a coil recall. When I looked through my records, I found Audi replaced all of my coils per this recall in 2010 (I had forgotten because I went into have something else serviced in 2010 and learned about the recall then...I had no issues until this week).

My question to those on the Forum is: Do you all think my 2010 coils (post recall) went bad? Or do you think there is another issue that caused the car to sputter, rpm up and down, and put up an ECM warning? I'm trying to arm my mechanic with as much info possible. He is a good guy, but probably doesn't have time to research this as deeply as I do. I want to point him in the right direction. Audi told me today that there "probably about 50 other things" that could cause this issue. I don't believe them.

The only thing I have to offer is I had a broken spark plug once where it would run o.k., then suddenly run like sh*t and the 'you're going to ruin your engine' light came on. Not sure what you mean by rpms going up and down but this is all I've got.

Hope it's something cheap and simple like that.

Thanks, but this is a problem that was quite common - and serious - before the recall so I am not sure it could be due to the spark plug(s). I am trying to find out if 1) the "recall" coils are now bad or 2) what other issues causes this very specific thing to happen.

Im going through the same issue with my 08 4.2. Low RPM below say 1500 it has a nasty mis fire. Over that the car runs fine. We changed all 4 cam sensors and we were told today by Identifix that it is not coil related and that it most likely is the timing chain tensioner which of course on this engine requires removing the transmission to the tune of about 28 hours in labor!

Have any of you guys scanned the computer for codes to see which cylinders are misfiring, and if there are any other codes in there?
