Default Automatic transmission won't engage in R or 5th

I have a 97 A4 1.8t automatic Quattro. It suddenly wouldn't shift into reverse, and while driving forward won't go all the way into 5th gear. The shift indicator lights on the dash have all lit up as well, can't tell which position the shift lever is in. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Scan the tcm for faults. It sounds like your in emergency running mode.

Isthere more than one place to hook up a tcm to? The one in the rear seat ashtray is missing or wasn't there to begin with.

Check the drivers sideunder the dash. There is only one place to hook the scan tool up to.

P1425 is the most important that the EVAP system ( shorted wire to ground ) on the canister purge valve this would set all the other codes

Wouldn't the o2 sensors having no signal cause the rest of the issues putting the car into safe mode and not allow it to shift into fifth gear to insure no damage is done to the tranny? I know this is how it works on ford mustangs.

Changed the o2 sensors, and finally hooked it up to a computer and cleared the codes. Everything seems to be working fine, tranny shifts normally, and no mil lit up.
