Default Brake is running thin (less than 10%)

I just got my service done and they mentioned that needed to be looked at within the next 2000 miles, they quoted me 345 for a new rear brake (just one, parts and labor). Now my question is.. do I need like some sorta special audi brake or is it something i can go to meneike or some other place that does brakes for half as much?

cool. yeah btw its a 99' 2.8 q if that was important. seem to keep leaving that out. not sure if its just one break or both rear as he did not say, from the wording he made it sound like just one is low. but on the order quote it says "needs rear brakes soon 345.00" then later i need rear outer tie rod which will be 185 + 127.50 alignment (which doesnt sound as bad) but still for the brakes is that still alot (even if it is both) can't i just go to meneike and get some oem or regular brakes (might just need pads, not sure) for a lot cheaper? (or take to my personal mechanic)..

Not difficult to change your own brakes? I might just ask my step-dad for a lesson. I have seen the audi oem brakes for like 40 dollars online so that is much cheaper if it's something i can do.

Anyways, i did just start hearing a squeek every once and awhile when i brake (normally at low speeds) so I do want to get this done within the next few days to a week just so i dont hurt anything.

if you do it yourself just go to autozone and rent a caliper tool set, the only special thing about audi rear brakes is you need a tool which turns the piston as it pushes it back. thats about it. i did all four of my brakes in about 2 hours and saved about $140 at NTB, the cheapest shop i could find, and about $700 audi told me and that with me having to buy their type of brake pads.

i'm about to do my front pads/rotors. the comment about the turning the piston as you push it back in. i have a 2003 a6 quattro. does this also apply to the front calipers? why?
thanks

You can use a C-clamp to push the front pistons in.
The rears must be screwed-in due to the hand brake.
I paid a mechanic for 3 hours labor, to do front and rear pads.
