Default Can P0431 trip P0741 on 02 Audi Allroad

I picked up this sweet 02 Audi 2.7T AllRoad Quattro with a shade over 90k mi on it at the auction. It drove fine for about 100 miles and then I felt a transmission hesitation which tripped P0431 (catalytic related) ... after I cleared that code, the very next day I drove the vehicle about 30 miles before the CEL tripped again.. now I'm getting P0741. The vehicle did the hesitation thing one more time. The code returns faster now, and it is now a recurring P0741.

Question 1: Are the two codes related in any way?

Question #2: From my research on google and youtube (and believe me, I put in the hours before writing this post) techs insist that the odds of p0741 going away after a fluid change are slim to none. What do you guys think? If I have to change the torque converter, it's going back to the auction, no way I'm dropping that kind of coin on this vehicle, I'll take a loss and roll my money into another unit.

Question #3: I don't have the VAG software for measuring the engine temp while topping off fluid, however, I do have a hand held laser thermometer, will aiming this at the pan suffice?

Thanks for any input ... from now on, nothing buy manual audis ... period

upon further inspection, I found the following damaged hoses and connections... could these be triggering my codes? the air filter is filthy too ... going to check spark plugs next.

It wouldn't hurt to repair those issues and see if the problem might go away. Changing the fluid and filter might fix the transmission. If the fluid and filter have not been changed, there could be some restriction of fluid flow by a clogged filter. You can read the engine and transmission fluid temp without a VAG-COM unit. The Actron scanner that I have will allow you to view the major engine sensors (I think I paid $200 for it and it's been worth it's weight in gold). I get my fluid and filter kits from Blauparts as they include everything you'll need. Plus I get a couple of extra liters of fluid in case I accidentally spill some. Getting the car off the ground and level so you can work on it is the biggest hurdle if you don't have a lift. I don't and I use 4 6-ton jack stands and carefully get the car about 18" off the floor of my garage to do these fluid changes.

It's almost too bad that you cannot get the Allroad in a manual. I'm looking to get one soon (2002-2004 model) and I wished they made them in a non-turbo, manual trans flavor. I guess that would make it an Avant with the height adjustable suspension though. I don't care. I'm not a fan of the heat that turbos put out and those automatic transmissions are just too damned expensive and complex to repair for the average knuckbuster like me.

Also, check out my thread about "glazed" spark plugs and check yours when you pull them. https://www.audiforums.com/forum/gen...k-plug-218806/

thanks, Dave. I'm going to try and do it with 4 roll up ramps with the vehicle at level 4. Would you take the chance with anything other than audi fluid and filter? I can get wholesale pricing ... happy thanksgiving

You must use the Synthetic Fluid with these transmissions. The fluid I got at Blauparts is compatible with the Audi stuff. Using the wrong ATF will kill the clutches in the transmission.

4 Ramps sounds like a pretty good idea but will they give you enough clearance?
