Default Catalytic Converter - '01 A6 Quattro

I have a 2001 A6 Quattro, 2.8L. Recently my CID light went on and it denotes to the passenger catalytic converter needing replacement. My question is that since I am not in CA (I am in CT), do I have to use a CA Emissions Cat or can I use a regular one? Audi CA Certified cats are over $700 just for the part, about $1100 installed. I wouldn't care so much if I wasn't worried the driver side one wouldnt be far behind and be out that much more vs having a Meineke type place swap both cats for regular ones. To me it seems logical, but I don't know if it would throw off the computer etc.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks JJ, knew about the warranty. They timed it right 'cause I am at 84k. That's the kick of it all.
I don't mind paying it necessarily, its just that I'd rather spend it smart and buy two regular cats than fix the one to OEM and then have the other side go shortly thereafter and drop another $1100.
