Checking codes on '94 90 CS Quattro

This is very confusing...how do you find out what is the code or codes? I just replaced my CTS today thinking that would fix the problems because I had (still have a CEL) and the CTS came up on the laptop showing it was bad. The CTS was changed and it still run's crappy and a CEL still pops up.
