Question Coil packs on 2005 3.0l Petrol engines

I own an A4 3.0 Petrol Cabriolet (55 Plate). Having nearly completed a 1.5hrs motorway run on Friday night, the engine suddenly had significant loss of power and with the accelerator down, the car vibrated significantly. I immediately suspected a coil pack problem having had similar on a previous TT. The Emmission Control System warning light was on and I crept the remaining few miles home. Starting the engine the following morning all was well and I drove to the local Audi service centre without issue. The car was plugged in and the EMS read. The verdict - 2 coil packs needed replacing, which the service centre didn't have in stock. The car drove perfectly all day on the Sunday and is booked in for new coil packs this week.

My question is it normal for a coil pack to fail and then work again? Is replacing them required if the engine is fully functional again?

Its not normal, but the coil packs on the 3.0L are the same ones used on the TT which suck to say the least. I would just stay away from the dealer and buy all six and save a bundle. www.ecstuning.com or www.purems.com. Check the web sites prices out for all six before letting the dealer replace just two, another one will fail down the road, trust me.
