What letter is on your key? I have a '99 A6 and mine is a "W". It's right by the hilt on the metal. If it's a W, it means that there is no immobilizer inside your car and you won't need a chip.

Hey, my Audi key has " W " on it, and I'm sure my '01 A6 has immobilizer .

Hmm, maybe i'm wrong then! I definitely read somewhere that the W meant it doesn't have one. Interesting. I'll do some research...

edit: here's where i read it: http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/cars/immobilizer.html I guess I read wrong when i was skimming. It needs to have a W with a strikethrough to indicate a car without an immobilizer.

I didn't think '99 have immobilizer, 2000 or '01 was supposed to be first year (A6).
Give your VIN to Audi dealer, they will know.
