Default DIY automatic transmission service

Learned this one at work. No pics at the moment, I don't have access to an Audi with an automatic. If someone would like to post them up, it would probably help.

Everyone has heard of someone draining the automatic transmission fluid instead of the oil by accident, only have to have to call a towtruck to have a mechanic refill it. No more.

This was done on a 2003 B5.5 Passat 2.8L 4-motion tiptronic. I don't claim this will work on every Audi/VW, so use this guide at your own risk.

---

You will need:
- http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductD...tnumber=648776 or a similar item. This is used to refill the AT. Use silicone tubing as an extention to get the fluid into the check/fill hole.
- VW/Audi ATF fluid (check capacity)
- wrenches to remove plugs (don't remember which)
- a friend

The Audi/VW transmission has two plugs. The rearward plug, larger in diameter, is the check/fill plug. The forward plug is the drain plug.

Draining:

To drain the transmission, remove both plugs. When all the fluid has run out of the transmission, replace the drainplug.

Refilling:

With the engine off, pump fluid into the transmission from the check/fill hole (rearward) until it begins to overflow consistently. It will overflow a little when you pump it in, so make sure it is filling the AT, and only continue to the next part when you are sure it is filled. Immediately after your friend starts the vehicle, the fluid drain should cease. Have your friend start the car, and move the gear selector into the lowest gear. Continue pumping fluid. Have your friend upshift one gear every 5 seconds while you are pumping. After he has reached the highest gear, have them put the car in park and continue pumping ATF fluid until it begins to drain out again. With the engine still running, replace the check and fill plug. Once it is back in place, go ahead and shut the vehicle off.

This is also the same procedure for some BMW AT refills.
