ESP, Where art thou?

ESP, Where art thou?
Hi there,
I have an A4 (B6) 1.9TDi, and have noticed that my ESP kicks in late. What I mean by this is that it only kicks in after the wheels have been skidding for a while. When I give it stick on pull-away, the wheels skid all the way from 2000 RPM , but ESP only kicks in at about 4200 RPM (on a wet road). During the non-ESP gap in-between, the car feels like it is wandering all over the road.
I don't know if this is my imagination, but I am sure that it used to come on almost immediately when the tyres started skidding. Has anyone else experience anything like this? Is there any sensors that could be faulty?
Please, I really need to find out if there is a problem with it. I am one of those guys that want my car operating at 110%, and even though I never really use the ESP, I'd like to know if anything might be wrong with it.
Any suggestions/comments will be appreciated.
Thanks
Peter
