Default exhuast spit water with starting problem

i have a 97 Audi a4 2.8 and have problem starting the car. When I manage to get it started, the exhaust spit water when i floor it. Any idea what is wrong with it? i was told that it might be the head gasket or something but does this affected the starting engine part? Once i got the car running, i have no problem. It can run for hours. i just replaced the sparkplugs but no change.

are you losing coolant? are the plugs getting wet with coolant rather than fuel? if yes suspect head gasket one way to do a quick check is remove the plugs and spin the engine over and watch for water spitting out of the plug holes or get a compression test done
