Default Failed Coil Pack

Thought I'd share my experience since searching this forum did not turn up my fault codes in the context that they applied to me.

2007 Audi A4 Avant (B7) was cutting out under moderate to heavy acceleration from a stop for a few weeks. No VAG-COM fault codes. Then all of a sudden was running rough and Check Engine Light (CEL) flashing. VAG-COM returns fault codes...

The "Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected" had me thinking it was a problem not specific to one cylinder. I used the Bentley manual troubleshooting and wasted half a day trying to figure out what global problem would cause multiple misfires. Re-gapped plugs, cleared fault codes, started motor, same fault codes reappear. Pulled out the multimeter, checked this and that. And on and on. The Bentley manual worked me into a corner stating that I needed to replace the cam position sensor. This compelled me to wonder why I would start buying new parts before I finished checking other things for free. After wasting all that time, I took the #3 cylinder coil pack and moved it to a different cylinder. This time, the fault code for #3 moved to the other cylinder. AHA! So "Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected" shows up even when the problem is localized to a specific cylinder. New coil pack less than $30 at Audi dealer. Car runs great.

In hindsight, I wish I had never picked up the Bentley until first trying to switch around the coil packs. It would have been a 15-minute job.

I got original equipment from the local Audi dealership. I think that they are Bosch. At only $30, I wasn't going to take my chances with parts houses.
