Default Help. possible total engine failure !!!!!

Hi guys.
I am new to this so I apologise in advance.

I have a 2008 1.8 tfsi a5. 70000 miles with associated servicing.

Yesterday the car threw up a management light and gave me a rough idle at tick over. It would sit lumpy at about 550 -600 revs but clear and drive fine once throttle applied. At some junctions it would be fine at others back to the lumpy 600rpm.
I pulled over and stopped/restarted the car. The only difference was it took 3 , 4 , 5 more cranks than normal to fire up and run.
As I was a short distance from work I continued to drive without any issues as this was similar to a failed o2 sensor I had a couple of months ago so I wasn't overly bothered.

The problems started following my 12hr shift.
I sat in my in the car and pressed the key. The car turned over but nothing. It just would not fire up. It just kept cranking with nothing.
The odd part is the speed of the crank. It's was fast. A bit like a sewing machine. Very similar to a failed Cam belt I have had on a previous car. Not even an attempt at firing. Looking at through the oil cap the cams/ rockers seemed to be moving as they should.
Stuck in work the aa were called. A quick diagnostic threw up some codes (I'm sorry I don't recall these right now) and towed to a garage.
Just now I have received the shitty news to prepare for the worse. Initial thought total engine rebuild or replacement ! An indepth investigation will go on in the next couple of days but now I'm panicking. This really isn't going to be a simple fix is it.

Sorry for the long speal but does anyone have any ideas.

Thanks in advance (a very worried a5 owner).
