Intermittent Turbo / Boost - help!
Hi .. newbie here.
Just acquired A3 2002 1.9 TDI Turbo for what I hope is a pretty decent price.
On the drive home to London down the motorway doing a not too excessive speed, I lose all boost from the engine, after an hour of driving - very little acceleration. Slow down and different gears still the same. Able to cruise but on accelerating, there is no turbo kicking in. Pull over to check it out and add some fuel (and call the guy who sold it to me - can't get hold of him! yet!). Thing is - turbo is back and working. No more problems ...that day.
Same again on Sunday down a different stretch. Return trip no problems.
Should I worry? Return it and get my money back? (said he would)
Seems like could be a pressure problem, or valve of some sort sticking after some use.
Anyone suffered this and got a fix?
As a side issue - if you don't have onboard computer, should the outside temp display be available? I got nothing showing.
thanks in advance

You may want to try lubing the wastegate. It sounds like it may be sticking open at times. However if its sticking internally all the lube in the world wont help it. You should also check the operation of the wastegate control valve. You may have seen it refered to as n75 on these forumns.

Brilliant - thanks for that, Avant80
I would think if it was cracks or holes, it would not be intermittent as it is - turn engine off ; restart and all back. Considering it is either sticking open (hence bit of lube may fix it) ,else the valve is faulty and need replacing.
How do I check the operation of the wastegate control valve, as suggested by dankhound? Got a number for the engine layout pic provided?
I'll have a look tonight when I get home.
cheers

RE: Intermittent Turbo / Boost - help!
Problem not occuring for now on drives to work - think it is only happening when I'm a bit heavy on the turbo.
Is a vag-com a must-have for someone not interested in upgrading/chipping etc? Done some searching on bits and pieces. Got laptop, downloaded software - guess I'm missing the necessary cable. Yeah?
Where's good to buy vag com in uk/london?
thanks all for your suggestions - not yet got the knowledge or gear to try them out. Trying for both.
Cheers
