well looks like i have a lifter problem. So tearing down my engine was a little overboard. but now I know the engine. Also upon taking off the oil pan i noticed that number 4 piston has been replaced. Rings and everything are good on it as well. So now i can put it all back together and see if i can find some decent priced lifters.

And does the engine have to be warmed up to test the lifters I was told that the lifters should not be spongy at all is this right

Don't know what engine, year or car you have so its hard to help you, also the engine code is stamped on the block and cylinder head. It should be a 3 letters/numbers, like AEB, ATW etc.
