Default Lots of smoke at idle

I need some help. I have a 2002 a4 quattro 1.8t. I have been having some problems with lack of power until the turbo kicks in as well as the turbo not kicking in at all. I noticed that the hose that comes off the valve cover to crankcase and back to turbo was rotting away. I replaced the hose. I am also hearing a whining noise (dont know what from only under acceleration) I want to try the inexpensive things first. Everything I have read leads to the turbo but I was wondering if maybe a PCV valve or blocked line? The smoke is not a oil smoke or antifreeze, more like unburnt fuel. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Do a boost leak test. Sounds like you have a boost leak, or a bad DV. Yes it can be the PVC system. Also pull the lower IC hose & see if there is oil in it.

I took the turbo off and there is oil (1/2) quart in the incoming lines. Also there is some play in the fan inside the turbo. I am assuming it is bad. Any help where i can find a new one reasonabley priced? I found turbochargedpros for around $685.

How much play? There should be a little. How does the exhaust side look? Is there oil in there? Oil on the compressor side is usually oil blow by so check the PVC system.

$685 for a new snail, it sounds good to me.
