Default I know this sounds funny to you but i don't wish this upon anybody.

Anybody have any ideas? i think it might be something with the links from shifter to the tranz hopefully will have some time today to put it on a lift.

I had a similar issue with a 97 A4 5 speed where the 4th and 5th gear were gone.
It turned out to be worn out splines on one of the transmission shafts causing the gears to rotate freely and never "engage".
If this is your issue you will have to open the tranny and rebuild. After confirming this is indeed your case a better option would be a good used tranny or a rebuilt one.

Default thanks for your help, I need more!!!

I got it into into 3rd today it didn't want to get in there but with some strength behind it i forced it into 3rd letting go of the clutch i didn't hear any strange noises and it drove fine getting out of third was also very hard never got in to 4th. 1st 2nd 5th and 6th go in with ease, 3rd goes in so hard and comes out with such pain. is it possible that its some links?

I've built lots of S4 and A6 gear boxes- if it's very difficult to get into gear (stiff or virtually impossible), it's an operating sleeve. This is the part that in it's resting position (neutral) allows the gear sets to free-wheel. When engaged forward or back will mate with the individual gear sets' sychronizer. There are upgraded sychro part numbers for that gear box too. Second gear operating sleeve is also an upgraded part number as it's usually the one that fails. Not so in your case obviously. have had to replace those before as well . Usually the 2nd gear operating sleeve is the one to go. Be carefull not to force the gear change as you will likely bend the brass selector shaft lever that actuates the operating sleeve.
