Default New car, first oil change interval?

This is in regards to my mother's new 2009 Volkswagen Rabbit, Naturally aspirated 2.5 liter Inline 5 cyl, 5 speed manual, FWD.

She brought it to the dealer to have the oil changed at 3000 miles but they said it's not due until 10,000 miles. Normally I would trust the dealer on something like this because they'd be protecting their interests on the warranty by keeping up with the scheduled maintenance. It's just that 10,000 miles seems like a very long way to go without an oil change. Is this long of an oil change interval typical with new cars?

Also, when would be the best time to start using synthetic oil?

Default Oil Interval

If it is brand new, then the 10000 miles is probably the break in period for the car. Also, chances are, the dealer is already using synthetic oil. That being said, it isn't unusual for cars with synthetic to only need an oil change every 5000 miles. This could be another contributor to why the dealer is saying 10000 miles. Hope this helps.

It comes with synthetic oil already. That old 'use mineral oil for break in' doesn't apply anymore with the very close tolerances of modern engines.

The dealer will not do a 'free' oil change before 10k if thats what your asking. You can get your own done, however. In fact, I would now, then at 10k.
