Plastic Thingy above Valve in Cylindar Head

Plastic Thingy above Valve in Cylindar Head
Hi,
I've just had to put my beloved Audi into the garage so that a piece of plastic from the Cylinder Head can be replaced. If you look at the picture, can anyone tell me what the purpose of this is. The Plastic thing (circled bottom left) had disintegrated and had blocked one of the valves.
The mechanic did try to explain but I didn't understand.
Basic info.
2003, AUDI A4 (B6), 2.0 FSI, 88k Miles
