Default Please help-2001 Audi S4 only starts in morning and at night

Hello! I have a strange problem with my 2001 s4...

1. It starts in the morning when I go to work just fine
2. It starts when I come home from work just fine
3. If I do one errand during the day it starts just fine
4. Heaven forbid I do two errands though and the car just turns and won't start! The car will eventually start again, but needs about 3 hours rest between each start.
I assumed that the reason why the car was starting in the morning and at night ok was that the car was completely cooled off and that perhaps the temperature sensor for the cooling system was bad and not allowing my car to start.
I just replaced the temperature sensor this morning, but that wasn't it.
I've been googling like crazy and now I have a new idea that it coould be a bad crankshaft sensor. I have no idea what this is, but is this possible? And if so can someone tell me how to fix it?
Any advice at all would be appreciated.

Ignition Coils – These are famous parts for the 1.8T they are very prone to failure. VW has had a recall on these because they were failing rapidly on 2001+ cars. To check for bad coils the best way is with a VAG COM. Log Blocks 015, and 016. This will be a misfire counter. Drive the car or let it run, and look for misfires. If you have a bad coil you will see the counter increase on a cylinder. If you have one counting up then it’s probably a bad coil. Turn off engine and take that coil out and swap it with another coil. The cylinders read left to right 1,2,3,4 when looking at the engine from the front. Use the VAG again to see if the misfires have also swapped to another cylinder. If it moved, then you have a bad coil. Replace it. If they do not move, then you likely have a plug problem. On some cars the ignition coils have problems and they will pop up out of the cylinder head and lose contact with the plug. Plugs should be torqued to 22 ft-lbs when changed. If the coils still pop up, and they are torqued properly I have created a bracket kit to hold them down ïŠ â€“ see sig.

With 6 ignition coils, one failing will not stop the engine from starting.

You should have the system checked for trouble codes and improper data with a scan tool. If everything looks good, you need to test for fuel and spark while the problem is occurring. Possibilities are a bad fuel pump, crank sensor, and the list goes on. Have to narrow it down. If you need more help with starting problems check out www.realworldautomotive.com

Thanks for all the advice everyone! The issue was the crankshaft sensor. Since it's a bit hard to get to and I'm a novice at fixing the car, I threw in the towel and brought it to the Audi Dealership near me. They're charging me $120 for the part and 2 hours of labor to replace it. I know the part is ~$20-$40 cheaper online, but I guess I'm paying for convenience.
