Default power steering pump problem

Hi, Have a whine in the power steering. Got some fluid from Audi and brought the level up to where it should be. The whine is still there! Tried bleeding the air by turning the wheel back and forth, but no luck, still air coming up in the reservoir. Any ideas on getting it out? and then if that does not do it what does it take to change the pump? Ken

i have a similar problem. when i start my car, i always let it warm up if its been sitting for more than two hours but lately, even after, it has a gross low key whine/hum. gets much worse when i turn my wheels and my wheel vibes alittle. doesnt affect my acceleration or get worse when i speed up but very noticable when turning.

and since i bought my car about 5k miles ago, whenever i park, the car always rocks alittle, even on flat surfaces. please help, kinda worried. thanks.

air in the system isn't the only issue that cause squeal...

belt tension (too tight or too loose)and pulley shaft bearing failure are also two very common reasons.

its hard to pass judgement thru text and no visual or audio representation.

the A6 sounds like shaft failure... can't fix... only replace the pump

the A4 all i can say is you have to inspect the complete power steering system for leaks or improper seals before you can really condemn your pump

Air was getting in the power steering system of my 02 A4 3.0 MTthrough a loose hose clamp on the low pressure side of the ps pump. I solved the problem by removing the original Audi clamp and replacing it with a 50 cent hose clamp from the hardware store. It's been about 1 year and the cheap fix is still working. I found the air leak by looking over the system and noting that dirt/grime had accumulated on the low pressure hose because a little fluid leaked out of the loose connection.

Also check the screen in the reservoir. If it is plugged with dirt the pump will suck air. You can take the reservoir out and clean the screen with some brake clean.

On some of the cars there is a restirctor in the return line to the reservoir. You will see the clamps that hold it in near the reservoir. Those were mostly installed on the 3.0l engine. Sometimes the restrictor gets plugged and can casue air to get sucked into the pump.
