Angry Problem with dash lights!?

When I drive at night I have noticed the dash lights will simultaneously dim and brighten, without me touching anything.
It usually only does it for a couple minutes and then the lights stay dim.
Any ideas about what may be causing this? and how to correct it?
And my lights are not automatic so I would assume there is no sensor on my car that adjusts the brightness of my lights accordingly with the brightness of the environment outside my car.

It is a 99 Audi a4 2.8 if that helps any
The most simple explanation of this would be the alternator is maybe poor, but I think it is something besides this.

Help please
Thanks

There are actually light sensors that adjust brightness... Just not your headlights. There is a light sensor under the zero of your spedometer.. and there is one on the radio... (Shine a flashlight at your radio at night and youll see) I believe the climate control shares one of the others. Anywho, since they are dimming simultaneously id most likely blame it on the dimmer switch on the instrument cluster (maybe the light sensor on the cluster but fairly unlikely, especially if your radio dims too). Have you tried turning it back and forth a couple times?? If that doesnt work id try pulling it apart and cleaning it, ive heard of people having issues with it and maybe replacing it with a new potentiometer...

I dont know for how long it dims or whatever, but mine will dim for like 1/2 a second everyonce and a while and go back to normal.
