Starting Problems then Engine Dies
Under a new user because it’s been so long I don’t have the email anymore to reset the password ha. I’ve got a 2001 A6 Quattro 4.2L AWN and TIP with 132,000mi that will not turn over (starter engages) most of the time and if it does, will die/cut off in gear, at idle in P or while driving at some point either 20 secs or an hour later and may or may not start back up, mostly not. Last time it was at the gas station by my house for 2 days. I am looking for a copy of wiring schematics for the entire ignition system going from key to fuel pump to ignition coils. My Audi repair disc does not contain a legible copy, I need a Bentley one day.
It’s been doing this for over 3 months now but getting worse as time goes. I’ve had it in the dealership and 2 indy shops and no one can figure it out. It’s throwing 20+ codes on the VAG, just off the top of my head they are – Short to Ground – all 8 fuel injectors, All 4 o2 sensors, EVAP, Secondary Air, Bank 1 and 2 lean, and more. I will be more specific if I can find them all in the paperwork. When the problem began, I ran to the forums and did all the typical repairs relating to this problem – New Crankshaft Position Sensor, New Coolant Temperature Sensor, New Fuel Pump, New Fuel Pump Relay, New Fuel Filter, New Fuel Pressure Regulator, and Checked all spark plugs, connectors to injectors and coil packs, and also checked engine compression. All good… And all I’ve done in the past year and a half is New Radiator and New Power Steering Pump. Already had complete timing belt service over 2 years ago (only 18k miles since then.) 1st time at the indy shop, was told it was a bad ECU with so many short to ground codes, new computer and car were taken to dealership and was told every single code popped right back up indicating it was not the ECU. They kept it for over a week, rechecked all the repairs I had done, swapped Crankshaft Position Sensor out twice with Audi brand, not it. Checked timing and relays by the ECU, not it. They were so stumped they were calling AudiTech hotline to brainstorm and get next to do. They finally came back with check all wires from ECU for damage. At $120 an hour. I said no thanks, too many wires to test at that price. Took it back to first indy shop, told them what Audi said, they kept it forever and finally called and told me it was Fuel Injector #2. They wanted $320 for the part and 3.5 hrs labor, I picked my car up, (it started) and drove it home, ordered a new injector for $50 and did it myself in 30 minutes. Guess what… Not it! On to second indy shop for diagnostics. After testing fuel pump power with key on, hold at almost 4V but no power running through fuel pump fuse. They determine ignition switch. Guess what, not it. New switch will show almost 4V at pump when key on as well and no power at fuse, turns out that’s ‘priming mode’ and functions properly at pump and fuse with engine running.
Anyhow, if you have made it reading this far, hopefully you can feel my pain. It’s very frustrating with no backup car and a new job further away. So many thousands in already with parts and diagnostics to no reapir. I NEED this fixed! I am not close to any good mechanic as I was in ATL. My next step is to trace every single wire related to the circuit/s with the Short to Ground codes and whatever else anyone has to suggest! There will be a small gift card mailed to the first person with the suggestion that fixes this annoyance! I am desperate to get this frustrating issue resolved! Thanks in advance!

i have a 98 audi a4 quattro 1.8t that all of a sudden cranks but doesn't run. Here is what i have done and come up with so far. I have no power to fuses 28 & 29 & 5v dc on fuse 34. I removed & test fuel pump relay and found it is good, at the relay port I test volt across point t and point 86 and I get 7v dc(when i put my leads to true grnd on the bottom of the relay board to point 86 i get 12v dc)i removed the fuel pump fuse & placed a jumper wire from point 30 to 87 to test power to the fuel pump fuse slot & i got 12v dc there but still no power to fuse 29 & 5v dc on fuse 34. Reinstall fuel pump fuse, heard the fuel pump running, tried to start the car, it would crank but not run. Any clue as to what i am missing. Do i have a bad ecu or crank sensor??
