Default Thunking/rattling noises from my front left wheel area

Audi A6

I've got a problem with my A6 that's driving me crazy. Every time I go over small bumps, I get a very pronounced thunking/rattling noise from the front left wheel area. I can hear it and I can feel it in my feet. I've taken it to two mechanics here in Chicago who specialize in German cars and they both tell me that everything is tight. Control arms are fine. Tie rod is fine. Strut/bearing/housing is fine. Any ideas out there?

Thanks!

I just went through this with my 01 and finally found the issue over the weekend. I had the same type of rattle that I could feel over small bumps yet I shook the tire out and inspected everything and couldnt find anything loose. On saturday I put it on the lift and did it again and again everything seemed tight. it has been driving me nuts so I wasnt about to give up. finally I took a pry bar and stuck one end in the coil spring and pried down on the outer end of the control arms and sure enough the upper rear arm moved down about an eighth of an inch. even though the wheel felt good and tight the ball joint on the control arm was bad. I replaced the control arm and my rattle/clunk is gone.
