Default tip problems

i just got a 99 a4 the has the auto trans. with tip. for some reason it wont work. the car still shifts on its own when i slide the shifter over but i cant change the gears myself. im really hoping that there is a sensor/switch or something easier than having to take it to a dealership to get it checked out. if you have any ideas pls let me know.

Do you have a display on your instrument cluster which shows the tiptronic or regular mode? When you switch to tip mode, it should show you gears instead of P R N D ...

I don't know much about your specific model. Do you have buttons on your steering wheel to shift gears? They light up when switched to tip mode in the S4 models.

yes i have the buttons on my steering wheel but ive never seen them light up. there is no change in the dash indicator that tells me which gear im in and nothing lights up to let me know that im using the tip.
