Hi, can anyone help ?
My Audi A3 1998 model will not shift out of park.

whats wrong in particular?
shift know wont pop out or tranny stuck, as jamed gear?

 

Shifter won't pop out. But I now know that my brake lights don't work even though the bulbs are ok.

 

Your brake light switch has failed. Replace it and the trans interlock will also release the shift mechanism.

 

I had the problem in my 2000 A4... called Audi Roadside Asst 800-411-9988 and they walked me through it... July in Memphis, 1pm hot as hell that much I remember...the rest... well, I think I had to turn the key while pressing the button and try to move the shifter with the parking brake engaged. Is the car parked on level ground ?

Yeh, the car is on level ground. I'll give that a go as well. Hopefully the replacement of the brakelight switch will cure it.

very good diagnostics there

 

Gave my husband the info from this forum and got him to take the brakelight switch out. He opened it up, cleaned all the metal contacts and re-fitted it.
The car is now back to normal thanks to everyone who made suggestions.
