Transponder Key - 1997 A6
Hello
Just got a 1997 A6 Quattro at auction, only 1 key available
I am getting conflicting reports from some on-line locksmith websites
Some say the key does not have a transponder, I was under the impression that it does.
Some places want me to send my key to make copies, others say they can do it by VIN Number lookup
I would like to avoid going to the dealer in order to get 2 duplicate keys made because of the expense
Can someone here please tell me my options?
Thanks

I have a 1999 A6 2.8L Quattro and I had a few keys made at a local locksmith shop for $30 out the door. I simply bought 2 blank (non-cut) keys off of ebay and brought them to a local locksmith that does laser cuts. Both keys work great! Simply go to ebay and search "1997 audi a6 key" and you'll see a whole bunch of keys for sale. In all I spent $55 total for 2 extra spare keys. I didn't have to bring to the dealership or anything. After they were cut at the locksmith they worked like a charm, hope this helps and good luck!

Hi
Thanks for the advice
I checked my local locksmith and he said the same as you suggested. He has the blank and I will bring my key to him this weekend. I'll let you know if it works.

Finally got around to getting the two keys I ordered from Ebay to the local locksmith..just as you said, he was able to copy my key and program the transponders..all together it cost me about $90 for two keys
The locksmith even gave me the "cut numbers" which he said was equivalent to the key code.....it is a 7-digit number, I'm wondering if it is indeed the SKC used by the dealers
