A few weeks ago my driver side window started making a grinding noise every time it was put up or down then a week or two after the grinding started the window does not move and only makes a very small grinding noise. does anyone know what would cause this or does anyone know how to take a 2004 Audi A4 door off to look and see?

Yes your window regulator needs to be replaced. This is a very common problem on Audi's. B5's have a problem with the plastic clips that hold the window breaking. B6's have a problem with the cables binding and jamming, which what you're hearing/seeing. The carrier assembly must be removed then glass removed to be able to take off the regulator.

 

Definitely sounds like the cable that moves the window up and down is screwed up. I have seen this in other cars, including my wifes '01 B5 A4. You will probably need to replace the whole window assembly, not the glass though.
