Hey guys. I've read quite afew threads but haven't found anything relating to my problem. I was driving on the motorway when I started to hear a slight humming noise, I then lost power and couldn't drive over 60mph without the car feeling like it was about to conk out. When I pulled over the car was very noisy and sounded like a diesel! I had no choice but to carry on driving as I had my 2 small kids with me. Now the car starts but the engine is now making alot of noise and when switched off White smoke starts to come of the exhausts. Is this the engine gone?? Does anyone know what this could mean apart from a big hole in my pocket?

Welcome to the forums

could be a bunch of things. blown turbo, head gasket. best thing to do is have a mechanic check it out. you should also post your question in the A4, B5 section. that is where most of the 1.8t experts hang out.

Thanks for your kind advise, the cars been taken to the garage this morning. If it needs a new engine, is it worth repairing in your opinion?

If they tell you that you need a new engine, and you are not prepared to do the work yourself, it is probably going to cost you too much to have a shop do it. It would be cheaper to buy something else.
