Default Are 1.8T's interference engines?

Hey all first post, big Audi A4 fan. I've been into road racing for many years and always thought the Audi's where great. I currently own a turbo car, it's an 86 Mustang SVO, cool car but it's for sale so I can buy an A4. O.K. back to my original question, are 1.8T's interference engines? I found a nice 1999 A4 quatro for sale with a broken timing belt. I don't want to take a chance on buying it if it's an interference engine because it could have bent valves and cracked pistons. Any feedback would be appreciated. TT

most multivalve engines are interference engine but that doesnt mean they will strike the valves when the belt goes, garage theory is fit a new belt first and in 70% cases your lucky

More than likely the valves are bent. Never seen an A4 break a belt & not bend valves.Your probably looking between $2000-$3000 to fix depending on how many valves are bent. I think those valves are something like $70-$80 a piece times 20. Hence the reason the car is for sale!!!!! KEEP LOOKING.

Yeah they are interference and the vavles are probably done. My friend works for Audi as a tech and he says it would. I work for VW and I have seen it before in the 1.8ts

Thanks, that exactly what my buddy told me, he owns his own repair shop. He told me that even after you send the head out to be repaired the engine never seems to perform the same. He said it's better to buy a reman long block.

I just got a quote from" cylinder heads to go" they will R&R the head for $595. I'll bet they did'nt research the model and did'nt know it has 20 valves.

keep looking. I wouldn't start in such a hole. You may not ever get out of it.
