Default Yet another new member -- trying to decide, I have some Q's

Hey all,
I'm new and considering buying a 96-99 A4. I'm a freshman at RIT, and i'm just looking for a nice (while reliable) car. I am a car-tuner enthusiast as many are you on these forums, except I come from the DSM world. Here's my 95 Talon TSi AWD My old car. I just sold it a few months ago because I didn't want to have to worry about it breaking on me. At the time of me selling it I ran a 13.4 @109 with a terrible 2.2 60', for those who are curious.

From browsing through the forums here, I realized if I got an A4 I should probably go with the 1.8T since there is more available upgrades/parts/go-faster-mods for them. Now for a few questions.
1) Are there any changes/improvements between 96-98 that should sway my decision on what year to get?
2) How much should I be spending for a typical, say, 1997 a4 1.8T 5 speed, 100K miles, all stock, all options, buying from a private owner?
3) Where should I look besides ebay and autotrader? (DSMers had www.dsmtrader.com, wondering if Audi'ers had something similar)
3) Most importantly, what are some common problems among these cars that I should look out for when looking for one?

Thanks!

Drew

Hey welcome to the forums.

1. Unless you are in europe there are no 96 1.8t's. They began in 97. There really arent any differences except in the late 98's they got a few exterior differences.

2. I wouln't spend over 7k

3. no dedicated audi sites that i know of.

4. Search for them, but mostly look for control arms, tie rods, timing belt, tensioner.
