Ask a Police Officer Thread Ver. 2
Speaking of "reasonable," I do know that the ultimate arbiter of that designation falls to whatever judge the roulette wheel stops on, but, honestly, if I'm rolling AWD & better than avg UHPAS rubber (not to mention an unverifyable decade-and-a-halfs experience of driving at speeds up to and above 100mph in teh rain and snow, while I lived in Europe), how do I convey this to your average law enforcement personnel without coming off like a know-it-all/I'm-invincible/threat-to-the-public? In other words,
What's the secret code for: Yes, I know I took that ramp at 75mph (or better), IN the rain, but, trust me, I've done it more times at twice that speed that YOu have, foreel-phoreal!!!
I only ask because this KEEPS coming up, in my life. So far, everytime has worked out to me being given a warning... But, that CAN'T last, can it? My "contrite" I-promise-to-be-more-careful-in-the-future-Officer face is bound to fail, sooner or later.

Whats the rule on speed signs found on exit ramp/on ramps and speed signs found before a curve in the road. For instance I read these signs as a suggestion, not a law because they are yellow and dont say SPEED LIMIT!

Sounds to me like the charges were dropped because he wrote you the wrong ticket. There is a selection on our citations, not sure about NJ but I'd bet it's the same, where you write in the speed you were going and the posted speed LIMIT. If he did this then you are right and he made a mistake because that was not the speed limit and it would be an unfair charge. In MD that would definately be speed greater than reasonable.

I had an ignorant park police cop gave me a ticket for doin 50 in a 15 around a curve marked with one of those signs a few months ago on my bike. Shouldn't have even stopped for his SUV but, watever.Cop wasright behind me with a bunch of other cars andwas red faced i had the ***** to take the turn at the speed i did with him behind me. Prob a power trip on his part.I went to court showed a pic of the road with a speed limit sign to the judge and showed the ticket, stated to the T exactly what i did truthfully. 30 seconds later i walked outta court with a dismissal sheet. It even makes a point of sayinin the NYS drivers handbook that those yellow signs are the "suggested" speed, not the limit and when one of those signs is posted on a turn the white speed limit sign prevails. However if you crash going around a turn with one of those signs while above thesuggested speed and below the posted speed they will give you a "failure to maintain control" ticket in NJ if your on a bike. In a car they won't say a word.

and pull me over when i hang off the bike goin around a turn? It provides the bike with more traction, thus giving you the ability to brake, adjust your line, or accelerate away from danger midcorner much harder then if you lean the bike. GO around the same turn twice with a cop sitting there the first time leaning the bike, the second time hanging off the bike the cop tried chasin after me wen i hung off the bike yet both times i was at the speed limit and the second time was much safer then the first as the bike wasn't nearly as close to its traction limits as the first time. It happens a lot with a cop goin the other way or somethin where if they see that knee leave the tank they try and bust a U,even though u are being safer and more aware as far as your traction limits are concerned. Is it ignorance, prejudice or somethin else? Also why do cops even try and chase sport bikes?

This may have been the exact reason i was let off yesturday. Ok now for the story, i was cruising along with traffic at about 75ish on a 65mph fhighway, came around a gradual corner and noticed it was straight for at least a mile or 2. So i figured, theres arent too many cars near me, and i have a wide open area to just floor it real quick and just push my tt. Ok, so i hit maybe 105 and then came up to a few more cars and then slowed down and cruised at 100. I then passed under a overpass(still going 100), looked in my rear view and saw a police car flying up towards me. I then slowed back to speed limit and realized he was coming after me. As soon as i new he was coming after me i pulled striaght over to the slow lane and signaled to get off at the next exit. By now i am on the offramp at the next exit with the cop behind me and his lights flashing. I turn right to get to an open area and then pulled off. The cop walked up to my window, asked for licence registation, and proof of insurance. I handed him everything and he walked back to his car. About 5 minuets later he came back and handed me a ticked with all of my stuff back and said he clocked me at 108 in a 65. So how lucky am i for being 17, going supposibly 43 mph over the speed limit, and driving away with him only saying "be safe"? Also what kind of price tag does will this ticket have. This is also my first speeding ticket and first time being "in trouble with the law" haha.

That is the basic principle of law enforcement, those quickest to co-operate can go home. I feel safe in saying this principle is embraced byMOST if not all officers.

I STRONGLY RECOMMEND YOU GO TO COURT, if you pay you are automatically guilty. Here you have an option to pay and request a court date. If you really want things to look good complete a drivers improvement program before your court date or at least enroll in one and bring documentation. This shows the judge you actually care about this ticket and want to correct things. Don't make up excuses when called either.

Found the ticket it was for 50 in a 25.Not against you cause you seem cool but what constitutes unreasonable? On my track bike with the street body work on it i can go around turns twice the speed of most performance cars even with sand around the turn. I have a Nesba and AMA amateur race liscence and go to the track 10+ times a year. Now being completely honest about the turn, it's marked 25 but if we got the plates off and are rolling serious we take it doin well into the triple digits 110-120ish without being near track pace and with plenty of lean angle and traction in reserve, track pace is easily into the high 130's low 140's. The next turn is marked 25 also and at track pace your not doin more then 70 around it,50 is pushin it in a car. Both turns theres a clear line of sight through. There are no cross streets on this road and it goes through the woods on one side with a cliff on the other so theres no one to hurt but yourself. Being that 110-120 is above the speed limit but still a sane enough speed for you to tighten up the line for someone crossin over the double yellow,or adjust for blown down branches speed limit aside just what is safe? Also why do cops always try

There is no reason to respond to this, they are hypothetical questions, thread will move on course. Thank you.

43 over, I can't believe he didn't haul your *** straight to jail. In Virginia, if I sit in my drivers seat too upright I might get a ticket for being white.
I hate Virginia...

True story
They pulled over a convoy of our fully marked county police cars on their way to Katrina to help out the victims. They wanted to issue our officers tickets because they were driving in the fast lane of the highway with some slow moving vehicles. Luckily higher ranks finally showed up and discussed it with our higher ranks, but it NEVER should have even been an issue.
