I'm not against you either Sarah. Just making my point, or, trying to.

Each of us has a preconception of the world, that we carry around with us, each and every day. Mine is no more right or wrong than anybody elses. What works for me, and allows me to sleep peacefullyy each noght isn't going to work for vnv, or panda, or i3udda, or Sarah. It works for ME, because of where I've been and what I've done. Sarah's works for her because of thse same reasons. Where she's been and what she's done have placed her where she is. I would no more presume to know what's best; what works for her, in her life, than she should me, in mine. And, no, I'm not saying that Sarah said anything about what would work for me... Just making another point.

BTW, Sarah, you guys make nice printers... Any chance of me getting a discount on one?j/k.

I'm gonna start posting topics that say DON'T READ THIS........then that way everyone will and whatever I have to say will be instantly important.

Not that what the original post said wasn't important......I just find it funny that the topic says don't read this.......and now it's a hot topic for something that shoulda never been read.
I was thinking the same thing

News companies are just like all other companies in the world. They want to make money. Bad news sells. It dosent' have to be a major crime or one that somebody just gets a slap on the wrist. Just show the crime on the news and let the masses assume punishment happens for 1 reason or another.

If minorities only make up 30% of the population and they get 30% of the jobs/scholarships/seats in a classroom. Its still only 30% and iirc equal is 50/50 so there is a problem here. Right ??

People remember abnormalities more. How many times a week does someone mention your hair style? How about the day after you get it cut? So a news company can show a crime uncommon to an area (white victim black offender or vice versa. ) Since your not dull to it it appears to have more coverage relative to the norm.

Just wanted to point out that inequalities may or may not exist in reality but can be created in the eyes of the viewer based on their personal experience.

BETisone tv STATION, among HOW MANY predominately white ones? Waaaaaaaa...

And, Palindari, while I do sincerely hope that these people recieve something akin to being drawn and quartered, I wonder if you will also pick up the mantle of minority children who come up missing, yet recieve virtually NO national coverage,NO media outcry, and NO public outrage. When we, as a nation, achieve that, I'll personally campaign against ALL forms of descrimination, including affirmative-action AND racial-profiling (something I have one on record as supporting, I might add).
Absolutely, mate! One of my other pet peeves is the national attention thrusted upon that white blonde gal (name escapes me) that disappeared in the Bahamas (maybe another island - I can't recall).

Then you have the whole Lacy Peterson parade - they even broadcasted her funeral live!

Here's my gripe - hundreds are mercilessly killed everyday - yet the media swarms on the attractive ones. Does this diminsh the not-so-attractive multitude that get ignored because they don't photograph well? or garnish enough public sympathy?

My 14 yr old niece has Down's Syndrome (it's called something else now) if she was abducted by some sick bastard no one outside of Bakersfield would know about it. She's not a Lacy Peterson is she...

My original complaint, Jazz, was there was no balance here. We have two benign cases of percieved race issues that get overwhelming media attention - when a flat out attrocity such as what happened to Tennessee gets jack crap for coverage.

How we got onto BET and affirmative action (which by the way, my brother-in-law's black and that was his argument I hear every holiday... lol) was a slight detour - but hey, if you can't go Off-Topic in the Off Topic forum then all hell is lost

To keep the off-off-off-topic dynamic going...

Ask your Bro-in-law what his feelings on racial-profiling are? Does he see it as only a "black-community" problem? Does he think it's wrong, no matter which "race" falls under the microscope? Is he OK with it, as long as it only singles out middle-easterners?

Personally, I think if there's a particular group of people, race immaterial, who are more likely suspects for a particular type of transgression, profile away. What are teh odds that a 90-year-old grandmother will be the one knocking off radios downtown Madison, on a Saturday night? Odds that one of the 5 black family's living in downtown MAdison, WI are involved? Odds that the 18-30 year old PWT biker crowd who've been tear-assin up and down teh boulevard the last 3 weekend straight? THAT's profiling. Narrowing down th elikely suspects. As long as it doesn't REPLACE good, common-sense police work, I see nothing wrong with it. But, about 90% of my fellow peeps-of-color do not agree. When the authorities get complacent, as they are fond of doing, especially in urban areas, and begin to rely SOLELY on profiling for their "usual" suspects, THEN I have a problem with the comoplacency of teh po-po, not so much with teh profiling. Separate problems, separate issues.

In a perfect world... ::sigh::

I just think if you don't want to be treated a certain way don't portray yourself in that light. Lots of people thought I'd never amount to anything so I strive to prove them wrong. I think all blacks need to have this mentality and a lot of them don't. I know that you do, but, that's not always the case. True it's not as easy for them to get a step up in the worldBUT NO ONE SAID LIFE IS EASY!I think the some blacks make the all blacks look bad IMO. IMO some of the young black ppl I see running around nowadays need to stop worrying about how cool they are cause they dress gangsta and start worrying about there school work. I live in a sububan neighborhood with quite a few well respected black ppl that work hard and make a good living and I see there kids running up and down the roads pants sagging and trying to act like there from the ghetto when there parents make good money and they could wear nice clothes that fit them, but, you have black rappers out here saying it's cool to be a gangsta and it's cool to carry hand guns and it's cool to shoot people and basically he's they're giving the police every reason in the book to look at a black person as apposed to a white person when someone gets robbed or shot, because these kids hear there idol talking about how cool these things are and they want to do the things they do. I'm not saying white ppl don't do this(look at eminem) but for the most part it's blacks. I know you AWDaholic aren't one of these kinds of ppl but most of the black ppl I know (not being racist) try to dress ghetto when they come from a nice background and it tends to make them look like a gangsta which makes them look like a suspect that would commit said crime. Now I see no point in profiling a black person who's an engineer or lawyer or doctor for a gang related crime committed on the south side and the engineer, lawyer, doctor lives on the northside........in that case the cop is just a racist *****.

Edit: guess what I'm trying to say AWDaholic is that more black ppl need to be like you and go for there dream and get a seat at the table and prove all the backward racist ppl wrong about you all being lazy bums.
